Frequently asked questions

Published models reach from 4 feet to 32 feet. Standard models run 8 to 20 steps and cover roughly 4 to 16 feet; High-Access models from 22 to 40 steps add a bolt-on truss and reach 11 to 32 feet. Because each model spans a range of heights, most jobs have two to four compatible options, and the sizing tool above lists them with the run and angle each one needs.

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1052(a)(2) says stairways are installed between 30 and 50 degrees from horizontal. AdjustaStairs adjusts continuously, and SafeSmart publishes configurations up to 55 degrees, so the sizing cards on this page mark each angle against the 30 to 50 degree band. Treat an angle above 50 degrees as a question for your dealer and your competent person, not as a configuration to order by default.

Measure the vertical distance from the lower landing to the upper landing, enter it in the sizing tool, and pick from the compatible models. A longer stair at the same height gives a shallower angle and a longer run, so check the run against the room you have at the base. Choose 24 inch width for single-file traffic with a free hand, or 48 inch when crews pass in both directions.

Pricing depends on the model, the width and the dealer, so every AdjustaStairs configuration is quoted. More steps and wider treads both cost more, and High-Access models from 22 to 40 steps are engineered to order. Use the sizing tool to pick the model and width for your height, then request a quote from one or more listed dealers in a single step.

Yes, through dealers that carry rental fleets. Rental suits a single project or a short elevation change that disappears once the slab is poured, while purchase pays off when the stair moves from job to job for years. The configurator's rental button sends the same height, model and width to the dealers listed here, so the quote comes back for the exact unit you sized rather than a generic stair.

SafeSmart rates a standard unit at under ten minutes for a two-person crew. The stair ships pre-assembled and folds flat, so setup means unfolding it, bolting the top to a slab edge, timber sleeper or steel frame, securing the base with ground pins, bolts, base plates or clamps, and raising the Lift and Lock handrails. No site-built parts and no special tools are involved, which is the main time saving over a job-made stair.

Longer flights are where a landing matters, and SafeSmart offers mid-landing bundles that place a pre-engineered platform roughly every 12 feet of rise on the High-Access models. Whether your run needs one depends on the total rise, the pitch you settle on and your site's own fall-protection plan, so raise it with the dealer when you request a quote rather than assuming a single flight will pass inspection.

The dealers section on this page lists every supplier on Scaffold Exchange that sells or rents AdjustaStairs, with their city and state, and you can request one quote from several of them at once. ATI Construction Products in Arvada, Colorado is the launch distributor. If no dealer is close to your site, request a quote anyway: many dealers ship nationwide, and freight is often cheaper than a local improvised alternative.

AdjustaStairs is a patented, articulating stair system manufactured by SafeSmart Access, built from marine-grade aluminum with self-leveling treads that automatically adjust to changing elevations and angles. It is designed to replace job-made ladders, extension ladders, and traditional switchback stair towers with a faster, safer, OSHA-and-ANSI-compliant solution.

Standard AdjustaStairs models carry a 660-pound weight rating. Adding the optional H-Brace reinforcement increases the rating to 1,160 pounds, and High-Access models reaching 16 to 32 feet include a bolt-on truss support system as standard equipment for the additional stability required at greater heights.

Most standard AdjustaStairs models can be installed by two people in under five to ten minutes, with no tools and no specialist knowledge required. The fold-flat, pre-assembled design unfolds into place, and once the top and bottom are secured and the Lift & Lock handrails are raised, the system is ready for immediate use.

SafeSmart offers AdjustaStairs models ranging from approximately 3 feet up to 32 feet. Taller configurations from 16 to 32 feet are available as High-Access models with truss reinforcement, or as Mid-Landing Bundles that integrate a pre-engineered landing every 12 feet to reduce fatigue and meet site-specific landing requirements.

Use the Scaffold Exchange vendor map to search by your location and filter by equipment type. You can see which local companies carry SafeSmart AdjustaStairs or compatible adjustable stair systems, compare their inventory, and contact them directly through the platform.

Yes. AdjustaStairs is engineered to comply with OSHA and ANSI regulations for stairway access. The applicable OSHA subpart depends on the specific installation and use case — always confirm with your vendor whether Subpart X (stairways) or Subpart L (scaffolds) governs your application. Visit the OSHA website for full interpretations and rulings.
