Materials

The netting, sheeting, wrap, and protection materials used with scaffolding — including debris, containment, personnel safety, privacy screen, and general scaffold netting, plastic sheets, shrink wrap, and floor cover protection. These materials catch falling debris, protect workers and the public, contain dust and overspray, shield work from weather, and protect finished surfaces. What Materials Are Used with Scaffolding?

Definition: Scaffold materials are the consumable and semi-reusable products installed on or around scaffolds to protect people, property, and the work. They include netting attached to scaffold faces or installed below work areas, sheeting and wrap used to enclose scaffolds, and protective coverings placed over finished floors.

A scaffold provides access, but most projects need more than access. On a high-rise facade, debris netting keeps chips, tools, and materials from falling onto sidewalks. During abrasive blasting or painting, containment netting and sheeting keep dust and overspray in the work area. Personnel safety nets catch workers who fall from leading edges, while privacy screen netting hides work from view and can carry branding. Shrink wrap and plastic sheeting create weather enclosures that let work continue through rain, wind, and cold.

Choosing the right material depends on the hazard, the environment, and the project duration. Mesh density affects how much debris and dust is captured and how much wind load reaches the scaffold. Flame-retardant materials are often required near hot work or on occupied buildings. Enclosing a scaffold with sheeting or wrap greatly increases wind load, so the scaffold must be designed and tied to carry it. Through Scaffold Exchange, you can find suppliers of netting, sheeting, wrap, and floor protection near you.

Main Groups of Scaffold Materials

Materials on Scaffold Exchange fall into several groups.

Debris

Debris & Scaffold Netting

Containment

Containment Netting

Denser netting used to contain dust, overspray, and abrasive during blasting, painting, and demolition.

Fall Protection

Personnel Safety Netting

Nets designed and tested to catch falling workers, installed below leading edges and open work areas.

Screening

Privacy Screen Netting

Screening that hides work areas, reduces visual clutter, and can be printed with branding or graphics.

Enclosure

Sheeting, Wrap & Floor Protection

Plastic sheets, shrink wrap for weather and containment enclosures, and floor cover protection for finished surfaces.

OSHA Compliance & Safety Standards

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.451 requires protection from falling objects on scaffolds, which debris netting, screens, and toe boards help provide, and requires scaffolds to be designed for the loads placed on them, including wind loads added by sheeting and wrap. Personnel safety nets must meet the requirements of 29 CFR 1926.502(c), including installation distance, outward extension, testing, mesh size, and weekly inspection. Debris netting is not a substitute for personnel fall protection unless it is rated and installed for that purpose.

  • Falling object protection where people pass below
  • Wind loads from sheeting included in scaffold design
  • Personnel nets installed and tested per 1926.502(c)
  • Flame-retardant materials where required
  • Netting and wrap secured and inspected regularly
  • Damaged materials repaired or replaced

Frequently Asked Questions

Debris netting catches falling materials and tools. Personnel safety netting is designed and tested to catch falling workers and must meet OSHA's safety net requirements. Debris netting does not replace personnel fall protection.
Containment netting uses a denser mesh to keep dust, overspray, and abrasive inside the work area during blasting, painting, and demolition. It is often combined with sheeting for higher levels of containment.
Yes. Netting and especially solid sheeting or shrink wrap increase the wind load on a scaffold. The scaffold must be designed, braced, and tied to carry those loads, often with engineering.
Flame-retardant netting and sheeting are often required near hot work, on occupied buildings, and by local fire codes or owner specifications. Check project requirements before purchasing.
Falling object protection and scaffold design loads are covered by OSHA 29 CFR 1926.451, and personnel safety nets are covered by 1926.502(c). Visit the OSHA website for full interpretations and rulings.
