What Are Fabrication & Repair Services?

Definition: Fabrication and repair services cover the building, maintaining, and restoring of scaffold and access equipment. Fabrication produces new steel or aluminum components and custom-designed equipment, while maintenance and repair services inspect, service, and fix existing equipment so it remains safe, compliant, and ready for use.

Scaffold equipment takes heavy wear in the field. Frames and tubes get bent, planks crack, fittings wear, and powered hoists and their safety devices need regular service. Owners of scaffold fleets, including contractors, rental companies, and industrial plants, rely on maintenance and repair providers to inspect returned equipment, fix what can be repaired, and remove what cannot from service.

Fabrication fills a different need. Some projects call for components that standard catalogs do not offer, such as custom brackets, beams, platforms, outrigger and rigging assemblies, stair and ramp sections, or equipment built for a specific structure. Steel and aluminum fabricators produce these parts, ideally working from engineered designs and qualified welding procedures so the finished components can safely carry their loads. Through Scaffold Exchange, you can find fabrication and repair providers near you.

OSHA Compliance & Safety Standards

OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926.451 requires that any scaffold part damaged or weakened so that its strength is less than required be immediately repaired, replaced, braced, or removed from service, and that scaffolds be designed by a qualified person. Custom-fabricated components must be designed and built to carry their intended loads, and components from different manufacturers must not be intermixed unless they are compatible. Welding is typically performed to industry codes such as AWS D1.1 for steel and AWS D1.2 for aluminum.

  • Damaged components repaired or removed from service
  • Custom components built to engineered designs
  • Welding performed to qualified procedures
  • Hoists serviced per the manufacturer's requirements
  • Repairs and inspections documented
  • Repaired equipment inspected before return to service

Frequently Asked Questions

They include steel and aluminum fabrication, custom-designed equipment, routine maintenance of scaffold and access equipment, and repairs to damaged components and powered equipment.
Some damage can be repaired following the manufacturer's guidance, but bent, cracked, or heavily corroded components are often replaced instead. OSHA requires weakened components to be repaired, replaced, braced, or removed from service immediately.
Custom fabrication is useful when standard equipment will not fit the structure or task, such as special brackets, beams, rigging, platforms, stairs, or ramps. Custom components should be designed by a qualified person and built to that design.
Steel is stronger and typically less expensive for heavy-duty components. Aluminum is much lighter and resists corrosion, which suits stairs, ramps, platforms, and equipment that will be handled or moved often.
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.451 covers damaged components, design by a qualified person, and intermixing of components. Visit the OSHA website for full interpretations and rulings.
