About Tractel
Overview: Tractel is an international manufacturer of equipment for lifting and handling, temporary and permanent access, height safety, and load measurement. Founded in 1941 in France, the company operates manufacturing and sales locations around the world, including North America, Europe, and Asia, and is part of the Alimak Group.
Tractel's first success came with the Tirfor, a manual hoist that pulls and lifts by passing a continuous wire rope through the machine. The Tirfor was revolutionary for its time and remains one of the best-known hoists in the world. In 1975, Tractel introduced the Tirak, a motorized traction hoist that became a global standard for suspended scaffolds and building maintenance equipment.
Over the following decades Tractel expanded into load measurement with Dynafor dynamometers in the 1980s and into personal fall protection in the 1990s, becoming a leading height safety brand. Today its access range includes Tirak hoists, aluminum suspended platforms, Blocstop secondary safety devices, and permanent building maintenance systems. Through Scaffold Exchange, you can find Tractel equipment and the providers who sell, rent, and service it.
Tractel Product Lines
Tractel manufactures equipment across four main areas. Products most relevant to scaffold and access work include the following.
Tirak Traction Hoists
Motorized traction hoists for swing stages, suspended platforms, and building maintenance units, introduced in 1975.
Blocstop Secondary Safety
Overspeed and slack-rope safety devices that arrest a suspended platform if the primary system fails.
Temporary & Permanent Access
Aluminum suspended platforms and permanent building maintenance and facade access systems.
Tirfor & Minifor Hoists
Manual pass-through wire rope hoists and compact electric hoists for lifting, pulling, and positioning loads.
Fall Protection & Load Measurement
Harnesses, self-retracting lifelines, horizontal lifelines, and Dynafor dynamometers for measuring loads.
Where Tractel Equipment Is Used

OSHA Compliance & Safety Standards
On U.S. construction sites, suspended scaffolds using powered hoists fall under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.451 and 1926.452. Hoists must be tested and listed by a qualified testing laboratory, have normal and emergency braking, and be used within their rated load. Each worker on a two-point suspended scaffold must use both a guardrail system and a personal fall arrest system on an independent lifeline. Permanent building maintenance equipment falls under OSHA 1910.66, and manual hoists used for rigging must be used within their rated capacity.
- Hoists listed by a qualified testing laboratory
- Secondary safety devices installed and tested
- Platform and hoist combinations approved by the manufacturer
- Independent lifelines and fall arrest for every worker
- Rigging and counterweights checked by a competent person
- Hoists serviced per the manufacturer's schedule
